
Background
On 11-12 January 2010 the diagnosis workshop was held in Pécs, the next Urban Ideas Bakery host in Hungary.
Sixteen enthusiastic local participants - representing various fields like city planning, art, architecture, city policy making - participated at the 2-day workshop in order to identify the most urgent urban issues in their hometown. Ted Matthews from British Council Norway facilitated the workshop, and three bakers from the previous Kaunas Bakery attended the event as experts.
Objectives
The participants investigated the city’s needs, challenges, barriers and resources from many aspects.
The main resources of the city were also listed by the participants:
- local community members
- the university
- the built environment
- the geographical location
- natural resources
- the opportunity of being the European Capital of Culture in 2010
During the workshop, the local people presented their best experiences of Pécs. A few highlights from this session:
- Slam poetry, creative workshop (a chance to be creative)
- Making a list of visual rubbish (handed to the government)
- Retextil Factory (interesting and innovative, recycling work)
- ÜresTér and Mizo factory events (inclusive and new approach in the city, new cultural importance)
- Tour to Tubes tower (experiencing nature)
- Hiring a small plane (flight over the city)
- Enjoying coffee with friends (everyday pleasures)
The event produced two broad themes: Community places and Community connections.
