Background
The University of Life Sciences (UMB) at Ås, just outside of Oslo, hosted the Future City Game on 1-3 November 2011. The participants were 55 students of landscape architecture and planning working on a semester course on rethinking development in Oppegård municipality, part of the larger Oslo area.
The workshop was the beginning of the students' ideas phase after having conducted a thorough analysis of the area. The course was arranged in dialogue with the municipality.
Objectives
The objective of the game was to come up with new concepts for making Oppegård a better place to live and prepare it for the future challenges that urban areas on the fringe of Oslo are facing.
Winning idea
The winning team proposed a new structure that provides facilities for health services, recreation and swimming. The building was designed as a green destination located within the forests of Oppegård, to attract attention and give a specific identity to the area.
Winning ideas from the other teams
The runner-up project provided ideas for new uses of the areas surrounding a lake located at the centre of Oppegård, making the lake once again an attractive element in the area.
The concept presented ideas for walking and bicycle routes, swimming and rest areas, all connected to existing infrastructure and housing areas.
