Future city game in Sonderborg - a good detour

Background

The Game was part of a process in which the municipality of Sønderborg gathered ideas from people in a specific area of the city. The reason for this is an opportunity for the municipality to win economic support to establish an area that could increase facilities for physical activity in the community.

Sønderborg is cooperating with a private architect’s office in the development of a project called ‘En God Omvej’ (A Good Detour). A major theme is to make a project where people from social and ethnic backgrounds can meet and interact.

Objectives

The location is an open field in the middle of several groups of non-profit housing. The different housing groups are very different both in social status and ethnic background of the residents. Five people from different ethnic backgrounds living in the area were asked to recruit players from the area to the game. The game was played in Sønderborg Vandrehjem (hostel), which is located in the immediate vicinity of the area of focus.

Winning idea

Sensory park
The field is arranged with winding paths of different ground texture. A wide variety of flowers and fruit trees gives abundant input to smell, sight and taste. A playground with swings and merry-go-rounds and other equipment will provide challenges for the vestibular system.

Winning ideas from the other teams

Globepark
A public park with four distinct areas and an elevated centre. The four areas should be:

  1. a playground for small children,
  2. a traffic playground for children ages 4–8, where traffic rules can be practised in a safe environment,
  3. an area for skateboarding and roller-skating,
  4. an area for soccer and other ball games.

The centre area should include a public grill, tables and benches, and a stage. The name ‘Globe’ refers to global, and should indicate the multi-ethnic backgrounds of the people in the area. The global aspect should be seen in the artistic designs of the equipment and furniture of the park, which should be in the form of animals from different parts of the world. The park should also include flowers from around the world.
