The future city game in Alby

Background

The Future city game ’Spelet om Alby’ was played in the municipality of Alby in Stockholm on 6 and 7 February 2010. Partner organisations were Subtopia, Botkyrka Kommun and Botkyrkabyggen.

Objectives

Botkyrka municipality is in the process of producing a new local development plan for Hågbyleden. As part of this process, the municipality collects views, opinions and thoughts from residents, companies and associations. The purpose of this game was to produce ideas and suggestions that would meet contemporary local challenges and also embrace future opportunities. The children’s perspective was embraced in this game, and therefore two 10-year-old girls also participated. The players were asked to picture Alby in 2010.

Winning idea

Walkabout Alby
The idea is to connect Alby to both its cultural diversity and local history by refurbishing its town centre, with a focus on Alby’s motto ‘Far From Average’. No large high street chains and fast food restaurants – only unique shops mirroring Alby’s  cultural diversity. The proposed culture centre would exhibit a yearly photo exhibition, showcasing photos taken by residents with the purpose of strengthening local history.

Winning ideas from the other teams

Alby Cultural House
The idea is to refurbish and rebuild the property currently housing the underground and car park with the aim of creating a new cultural centre and landmark in Alby. The centre should be of glass, to make it easy to view all activities inside, such as dance, art and chess. There should also be a large community hall and a café. This property should be run by local people and entrepreneurs.

Walk This Way
This idea is about putting Alby on the map, moving around safely in the area and exercising. Walkways and cycle paths should be improved and developed to reduce distances and increase security and safety. So that more people can find their way to Alby, an airport bus stop should be established for buses coming from Skavsta Airport (Ryan Air). A recreational park should be built to encourage residents to exercise more.
