Background

The Future city game ’Spelet om Orminges framtid’ was played in Orminge in Stockholm on 5 and 6 December 2009. Partners were Nacka Kommun and Boo Folkets Hus.

Objectives

Orminge town hall has been increasingly subjected to competition for visitors as new shopping centres are built in the vicinity. This has resulted in a downward spiral of fewer visitors, less revenue, decreased level of service, increased insecurity and so on. The game was played to help Nacka municipality in its planning to develop Orminge town centre to make it a safer and livelier place.

Winning idea

The new front – live and be
The back of Orminge town centre is where drug abusers and youth gather in the evenings. The place lacks both charm and cheer. An ecological activity centre should be built there, with a sports centre, entrepreneur centre, indoor swimming pool, and a meeting point with a café. There should also be a roof garden. The new front would create new employment opportunities and give residents a place to be.

Winning ideas from the other teams

Campus Orminge
Campus Orminge will provide education in entrepreneurship, events and business start-ups in vacant spaces in the area. There will be an exchange of knowledge and resources. The idea also encompasses ‘Ormingerådet’, a board consisting of organisations, authorities and associations who meet on a regular basis to discuss and debate city council propositions.

Future Snake City
Boo community centre should house Orminge development centre as a house of knowledge, culture and entertainment. The centre would provide higher education in entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship and enterprise. It should be a trade centre for local and global business ideas. The centre should provide financial and mentor support for young peoples’ ideas and projects. There should also be a youth centre, with long opening hours to provide a place for youth to be and do things they like. The effect of this initiative would also reduce crime.

Ormingedomen
This idea seeks to create something unique for Orminge to attract people to the place. The players proposed building a large dome, like a replica of the existing water tower.  The idea was to build a skyscraper behind it, consisting of residential apartments and a restaurant. Th dome would house an adventure pool and a giant diving barrel to attract divers to Orminge. The dome would provide educational courses about the environment, and there would also be meeting places and activities for all ages, a café and cinema. The dome would give Orminge an identity and put it on the map.
