Kaunas in Lithuania hosts the very first Urban Ideas Bakery
10.12.2009

On 10-11 December 2009, the Lithuanian city of Kaunas is hosting the very first Urban Ideas Bakery event to engage innovative local community members and international experts to 'bake ideas' - turn them into practical solutions improving the quality of life in this city. The British Council is organising this event in partnership with the Career Centre at Kaunas University of Technology and Kaunas City Council.

The event is part of the Urban Ideas Bakery problem-solving and planning process developed by the British Council and its partners, experts working in the field of social innovation around Europe. The Urban Ideas Bakery works on the premise that people are the centre of urban innovation, and that without their creative ideas and ownership of the process, success is not possible.

A great deal of diagnostic work has already been done in Kaunas to prepare the ground for the first Urban Ideas Bakery event. In October, eighteen local community members, including representatives of the Kaunas City Council, journalists, entrepreneurs and designers, met international facilitators to identify challenges and barriers to effective problem-solving, review resources and share best practices.

The very first Urban Ideas Bakery event will focus on solving problems related to safety in the Kaunas streets and will look at how to create the image of Kaunas as a friendly city. Fifteen "Bakers" from the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Latvia, Norway, Poland and the United Kingdom will share their experiences and ideas for urban solutions with thirty local ‘Bakers’ – established and emerging Lithuanian leaders.

Follow the latest Kaunas Urban Ideas Bakery developments in the blogs written in Lithuanian by Povilas Valiauga from the Kaunas University of Technology  and in English by Roy Cross and Ted Matthews.

And watch this space – we will inform you what innovations have been baked for Kaunas!
