The New World Neighbourhood Society organised a Public Space Festival to encourage dialogue about public space and its use. The seminar was closely connected to the New World Neighbourhood Society's Public Planning Project and discussed new approaches to public space planning, focusing not only on physical space, but also on social relations. The seminar covered all aspects of the above-mentioned project, including city communities and the importance of grassroots initiatives, creative neighbourhoods, practices to engage local residents in city planning processes, urban ecology, sustainable energy and its use in cities.
The seminar featured speakers from the UK (Andrew Erskine from Tom Fleming Creative Consultancy), Finland (Peter Tattersall from DODO and Roope Mokka from DEMOS; Latvia (Gvido Princis fom the Riga City Council City Development Department); and Estonia ( Andres Alver, architect/city planner, Helen Sooväli from the City Planning Department, and Meelis Uustal from Tallinn University.
