Wiersze w Metrze (Poems on the Underground) was inspired by similar projects in, among others places, Dublin, Paris, New York, Barcelona, Stockholm, Stuttgard and Moscow, but most of all by Poems on the Underground which began in London in 1986 and has been organised regularly ever since.

The aim of Wiersze w Metrze is to popularise contemporary European poetry in the Warsaw underground. In 2010, it will be accompanied by happenings, a haiku competition, a poetry graffiti competition, and educational workshops.

The Wiersze w Metrze project was initiated by the Book Institute and the British Council in 2008.
