Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw October 1 - 31, 2010 Grand Opening: October 2 (Saturday), 19:00
“Warsaw under construction II” is a programme of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, devoted to broadly understood design. It was launched in autumn 2009 within the framework of Warsaw’s candidacy for the title of the European Capital of Culture 2016.
The first edition of WUC came as a “trailer” of the festival, exploring various fields of design – from graphic design and typography, through industrial and social design to macro-scale urban planning. For two months the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and several satellite venues (including the furniture pavilion Emilia, neighbouring the museum’s temporary seat) hosted lectures, exhibitions, urban space projects, workshops and conferences. There was a special focus on consultations with specialists in various domains (sociologists, journalists, officials, architects, NGO activists, etc.) as well as participation of the inhabitants of Warsaw, who presented their own visions of change in the city within the cycle “Proposals Department”.
This year’s edition of the WUC Festival is held throughout October 2010 and preserves the form of a varied programme of debates, exhibitions and social events, embracing manifold aspects of design that involves inhabitants, groups, collectives, organisations and institutions into the process of planning and reorganising urban space in Warsaw.
The UK involvement involves lectures, sessions and installations:
- "Pleasure" - site specific installations by three architectural ateliers from London: Common Office, Dallas Pierce Quintero and Office for Subversive Architecture on one of Warsaw's key problems – unfriendly, overwhelming and under-designed public space.
- „City Destroyed by Cash” by Damon Rich, Cambridge (artist, designer, founder for the Center for Urban Pedagogy).
- „A Guide to the New Ruins” by Owen Hatherley, London (lecturer, writer, architecture critic).
- AD SPACE workshops by Finn Williams from the The Common Office in London and 'Moje Miasto A w Nim' Association from Warsaw.
The programme is realised within the framework of the Capital City of Warsaw candidacy for title of the European Capital of Culture 2016.
