Third case-study workshop: Monika Niziol-Celewicz, The Talent School (Poland), 9.45am
23.03.2010
Monika Niziol-Celewizc, 33, from Lublin, Poland, decided to set up ‘Szkola Talentow’ (Talent School) when she realised there weren’t enough resources available to help her teach her young daughter to read.
Using her experience as an academic and teacher, Monika researched the best methods to teach pre-school children up to the age of six.
“There was a real need for something to change”, she says. “Education is very poor in Polish schools. It took me three years to find people with the passion to help me and who were prepared to work for very little money!”
Monika developed a reading scheme based on flash cards that use whole words and images rather than alphabets and collated these in a guide book for parents. She also set up an English Club for kids in which Polish is banned and everyone speaks English.
But the Talent School isn’t just concerned with reading. They also teach the Suzuki method of learning how to play the violin and other musical instruments, as well as teach about health and nutrition. She launched the School in October last year.
In the workshop, facilitated by Micheal Pyner, chief executive of the Shoreditch Trust (London), delegates gave her advice on how to build her brand and market it effectively so it can gain credibility.
“It was very helpful”, says Monika. “I need to think about my strategy now. I would like to go abroad and make presentations showing how our methods work and might use the British Council infrastructure for that. I would also like to write articles and papers about the system.”
