The spark of genius is in everyone of us, it is not something that is based in special experts and creative superstars. We need to create special places in our cities where you, me and everybody can show our genius - and jumpstart our godly spark.
The Danish Minister of Culture recently launched her new policy 'Culture for Everybody'. Where is this taking us in Denmark? Nowhere forward, it's basically taking us 30-40 years backwards.
Copenhagen has not had a lucky hand in creating a bottom-up approach to become more creative. The City Council is afraid to lose control, which therefore scares away artists and creative people. Municipal systems are also counterproductive, what we need is dancing bureaucrats and singing civil servants! Like in Barcelona where culture is not a municipal responsibilty at all, but a private company (Cultura Barcelona).
Artists have been distanced from politics (as a reaction to the very political 1970s), but they are maybe too disattached and disengaged now. Artists need to take responsibility, to take part and engage in our common political realities. They should get out of the orderly, controlled mainstream dynamics in Denmark. Overprotection has disengaged artists - citizenship should be voiced more than the present one-eyed focus on audience numbers and target groups.
Diversity should be one of the main success criteria of culture and creativity. If we are not challenging the notion of inclusion and intercultural dialogue, we are growing static and arrogant - not creative.
Thought provoking statement from the floor: The Danish state church is fully funded by the State. Therefore it is not publicly discussed, and thereby getting static, boring and conservative.
Denmark has 800,000 people living on the dole, basically to get them to shut up. But this is not sustainable.
Copenhagen should be wonderful and has loads of potential, but how is this developing. It is the only real city in Denmark, though, which is peculiar in a country that has a rural perspective of self-understanding... Denmark is good a practical, functional, focus on daily life and efficient solutions - tamed creativity!
