Just managed to get to Pécs for the roundup of day 1 of Urban Ideas Bakery. The groups have spent today getting a deeper understanding of the city context, by going through the materials from the diagnostic event. After the official context setting the bakers wandered off into the city to get first hand impressions of the place and to talk to the local stakeholders, artists, civil servants, local businesspeople, and get their take on things.
The bakers were given quite clear tasks to look at ideas, based on the context setting, and how these concepts for solutions could be implemented in the short, medium and long term - the interesting tweak here being that the three concept solution being either related or working independently.
After thinking of ideas the groups have now started considering which resources/barriers, planned postive effects and possible negative effects the different ideas have.
Some of the things that cam out of this scoping exercise was that there have been lots of temporary solutions. Temporary solutions seem to tick a box but unfortunately they don't have a lasting impact. There is a real desire that what comes out of the Urban Ideas Bakery either is lasting or at least question the role and downsides of temporary solutions.
Another idea that was discussed was to calculate the value of the NGO's work in Pécs and offset this value in rents and other services that NGOs buy from the local authoriy.
Finally, it was discussed whether public space should to a greater degree be taken over by and run by the public.
