We have broken into groups and I am currently in a group that discusses "Present European Cities and Culture". Culture is mentioned as being the "voice of society". The group thinks that culture can be seen as a driving engine cities because it attracts people with resources. People engage in culture, not necessarily to make money but to make a mark, to get status.
It is also discussed whether the connection between culture and cities being resourcesful. Big companies and resourcesful people may choose to move to a city with a rich cultural life.
Should culture be free, should it for example be free to go to museums or will people value culture more if they have to pay for it?
Should there be an opera tax, like some countries have a church tax, so people can choose whether they want to support certain cultural activities. In Hungary you can donate 1% of your tax to charities, eg. cultural instituions. So maybe this could be a way forward to increase public engagement. Let us know what you think.
